WOW Tour Guide - Mechanic
A Nationwide Tourism Rally to search for the Best Destination Tour Guides
WOW Tour Guide is a nationwide competition and tourism campaign that will search for the country's best budding destination guides. Participants will compete and showcase their competence and passion in conducting a tour of their native destination or a particular destination that they wish to represent.
The objective of the competition is to instill among the youth a strong sense of awareness and appreciation about the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. Moreover, it aims to discover a fresh batch of exceptional tour guides who are young, vibrant, talented and armed with a great pride of being a Filipino and can be groomed as future Tourism Champions.
WHO ARE QUALIFIED TO JOIN?
The competition is open to everyone, 18 years old and above, who has completed at least two (2) years of a four-year course. Applicants must choose a destination that they wish to represent.The WOW Tour Guide Competition is not open to tour guides who are already accredited by the Department of Tourism.
REQUIREMENTS
:• Must have completed at least two (2) years of a four (4) year collegiate course
• Must possess good moral character
• Must be proficient in the English language
• Must have extensive knowledge of the destination that will be represented in the competition
• Must complete the FREE Tour Guiding Seminars* of the Department of Tourism at SM SuperMalls
An official certificate will be issued by the Department of Tourism upon completion of the entire
Tour Guiding Seminar for four days.
• Must attend the Pre-Screening process of the Department of Tourism (DOT) to be conducted by the Tourism Standards Department with details below:

Time: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Where: 4F DOT Auditorium TM Kalaw St. Ermita, Manila
• Interested parties are required to bring their resume and school documents (for college level applicants) and prepare a spiel about what makes them a WOW Tour Guide and a brief introduction of the destination they wish to represent.
* The FREE Tour Guiding Seminar is open to all interested parties but priority will be given to applicants who have been pre-screened by the Department of Tourism. Online pre-registration is required.
COMPETITION RULES:
1. Submission of an entry into the competition constitutes acceptance of these rules (“Competition Rules”).
2. The competition is open to everyone who wants to represent a Philippine destination. Applicants must be 18 years old and above and must meet all the requirements of the competition stated above.
3. Interested participants must register online for the FREE Tour Guiding Seminar at www.IslandsPhilippines.net beginning 15 March 2010.
4. After submitting the necessary information and fulfilling all the
requirements and upon completion of the tour guiding seminar
by the Department of Tourism, the applicant may upload a
5-minute travel video entry that shows why he/she should be
considered among the country's best tour guides while
demonstrating brief tour guiding skills by featuring his/her local
destination.
5. All videos are required to have a standard introduction for
proper identification. Applicants are required to use the following
standard introduction spiel:
“My name is/ I am (name), __(age) years old, and I am a WOW Tour Guide from ______(Destination)!”
6. All travel videos must be in English. It is the applicant’s prerogative to use some phrases or words
in the local dialect as long as translations are provided following the words or phrases.
7. Entries of the five (5) minute video must be submitted on or before the 12 noon cut-off of the
schedules (please refer to schedule grid below). Travel videos will be subject to screening by the
administrators of www.IslandsPhilippines.net. Videos found to contain offensive and inappropriate
content will be deleted from the website.
8. Short listing of participants and travel videos will be determined by the combined scores acquired
from online polls and competition judges from both government and private sectors.
9. From April to August, the WOW Tour Guide Caravan will be held in key local destination spots in partnership with SM Super Malls and in coordination with the respective local governments, mayors, governors, schools and Department of Tourism regional offices. The schedule of the WOW Tour Guide Caravan will be posted in the marketing and promotional collaterals of the WOW Tour Guide Campaign.
10. The free tour guiding seminars which will be given by the Department of Tourism, and which are required for this competition, will be held during the WOW Tour Guide Caravan at select SM Supermalls branches.
11. www.IslandsPhilippines.Net will set up a video booth at SM Supermalls to give a chance to those who cannot submit their videos online. Interested participants may have a video of their tour guiding skills recorded at the designated Digital Booths. All videos recorded at the video booth will be considered official entries.
12. The “Top 30” participants will be announced
and posted on www.IslandsPhilippines.Net,
with 10 participants each from Luzon
(to be announced on August 6), Visayas
(to be announced on September 19) and
Mindanao (to be announced on October 16).
13. The “Top 30” will be determined by the following:
40% Online Poll
30% Judging by representatives from
the private sector
30% Judging by representatives from the government sector
14. Criteria for Judging by the Government and Private Sectors are as follows:
40% Knowledge of the culture, history and facts of the destination and of the most popular and interesting tourist attractions
20% Communication and Public Speaking Skills / Fluency in English
20% Personality and techniques in delivering the tour guiding skills
20% Organization flow of the video presentation in terms of achieving a high impact opening,
body and closing
15. The “Top 30” must then work on a more comprehensive and exciting
ten (10)-minute travel video to qualify for the “Final 10”. Their video must
showcase the beauty and uniqueness of their local destination through their
tour guiding skills. Their updated video must be uploaded at
www.IslandsPhilippines.Net not later than 12 noon of 31 October 2010.
16. From the “Top 30”, online polls and judging by the government and private
sector will determine the “Final 10”.
17. On 13 November 2010, the “Final 10” will then be posted online at www.IslandsPhilippines.Net.
The finalist will also receive an official communication of confirmation of their inclusion on the
“Final 10” List.
18. The “Final 10” will then be invited to the Grand Awarding Ceremony on 27 November 2010 where Live
Judging will be conducted by core judges from the private and government sectors and by the guests to
determine the “Top 3” winners.
DETERMINATION OF TOP 3 WINNERS
19. Winners will be determined by the combined scores acquired from online polls and competition judges
from both the government and private sectors.20. Winners will be determined by the following:

40% Panel Screening by the judges from private and government sectors
20% On the spot votes by the attendees of the Grand Awarding Ceremony on
27 November 2010 21. Criteria for Judging are as follows:

20% Communication and Public Speaking Skills / Fluency in English
20% Personality and techniques in delivering the tour guiding skills
20% Organization flow of the video presentation in terms of achieving a high impact opening,
body and closing.22. Winners will be posted on www.IslandsPhilippines.net on 28 November 2010 and will be notified by
phone and registered mail.

23. The winners will be given the following cash prizes plus gifts from sponsors: 1st Prize: P300,000
2nd Prize: P150,000
3rd Prize: P50,000
